JULIEN CARLIER

Julien est né à Bruxelles en 1985. Il a débuté la danse par la pratique du Breakdance. Parallèlement, il étudie la kinésithérapie à l’Université Libre de Bruxelles et obtient un Master en 2009. Il s’est formé de manière autodidacte à la création artistique via des rencontres, des projets d’échanges interdisciplinaires et des créations collectives. Sa démarche combine la virtuosité de son background de danseur.se.s Hip-Hop à une recherche autour de l’intime et du sensible. Son travail se nourrit des rencontres, de ses différentes pratiques et des expériences de vie. Il explore, à travers des formes chorégraphiques hybrides, la porosité entre la réalité vécue par l’individu en son for intérieur et celle perçue par les autres depuis l’extérieur. C’est le passage du monde réel vers l’espace scénique qui l’intéresse, plaçant le corps comme médium/témoin de cette transformation. Parmi ses thèmes des créations, on retrouve entre autres :  la rencontre entre la danse et d’autres pratiques artistiques ; le rapport à la contrainte, à l’effort et à l’engagement physique ; la notion de perspective, de composition d’images et de Zoom ; une recherche autour des limites.

Depuis 2015, Julien réalise son propre travail chorégraphique qui évolue pour s’ouvrir de plus en plus vers l'international : MON/DE (2015), DÉJÀ VU (2016), GOLEM (2019), DRESS CODE (2021), COLLAPSE (2021), TRAJECTOIRES (2022), PAYSAGE (création 2024).

Il a participé à deux reprises aux programmes de formation à l’abbaye de Royaumont à Paris : Prototype IV en 2016-17, et OPUS en août 2021. De 2020 à 2022, il est chorégraphe résident à Charleroi Danse, et sera artiste associé au Théâtre de Liège entre 2024 et 2028. Julien est également accompagné par le Grand Studio, Bloom Project et leurs différents réseaux.

Julien Carlier est un intervenant régulier du Master Danse et Pratique Chorégraphique (Insas, La cambre, Charleroi-danse).

Compagnie Abis

Créée en 2017, la compagnie Abis est articulée autour du travail chorégraphique de Julien Carlier. Elle affirme une démarche expérimentale mélangeant sans cesse les disciplines et revendiquant un aspect hybride à mi-chemin entre plusieurs formes d'esthétiques. Parmi les activités développées par la Cie sont organisées des projets de créations à proprement parler ; des résidences LABOS servant à perfectionner ou faire émerger des idées, à rencontrer des artistes ; la rencontre avec les publics autour de pratiques (atelier), de discussions et d’immersion dans le travail de la compagnie (médiation).

Les collaborations récurrentes au sein de la compagnie jouent un rôle très important dans la réalisation des projets. Simon Carlier participe à la création musicale de tous les projets. Via sa présence et son implication permanente dans les processus de création, il apporte de précieux conseils artistiques et dramaturgiques. Il contribue aussi à l'élaboration, en collaboration avec le chorégraphe, de l'identité musicale et sonore de la compagnie.

La chorégraphe Fanny Brouyaux a également collaboré sur plusieurs projets en tant que dramaturge (GOLEM, DRESS CODE, COLLAPSE).

LABOS

Ce sont des résidences de recherche chorégraphique ponctuelles et itinérantes s’installant dans des lieux partenaires. Elles nous permettent de travailler la matière chorégraphique via l’expérimentation, de faire émerger des idées, de faire se rencontrer les disciplines et les artistes, d'inventer des formes multidisciplinaires en toute liberté. 

Chaque module s’articule autour d’une thématique ciblée, toujours en lien avec les recherches poursuivies par la compagnie. Des danseur.se.s et artistes d’autres disciplines y sont invité.e.s afin d’échanger et expérimenter par le mouvement autour de ces thématiques. 

Les Labos sont devenus au fil des ans une étape à part entière de notre processus de création. Ces allers-retours entre phase de recherche et de création font émerger des pistes chorégraphiques très variées. Certaines donnent très vite lieu à des pièces, tandis que d'autres sont abandonnées ou mûrissent lors des Labos futurs. Le projet global de la compagnie s'inscrit dans cette philosophie du “processus” où ce sont le contexte, les personnes impliquées et les éléments mis en jeu qui définissent fondamentalement la forme des objets artistiques en construction. Les LABOS constituent aussi des occasions uniques de créer des liens avec les lieux qui nous accueillent et la communauté de danseurs qui gravitent autour de ceux-ci, afin d'envisager des collaborations pérennes avec ces institutions.

JULIEN CARLIER

Julien was born in Brussels in 1985. He began dancing through the practice of Breakdance. Alongside his dance pursuits, he studied physiotherapy at the Free University of Brussels and obtained a Master's degree in 2009. He self-taught himself in artistic creation through encounters, interdisciplinary exchange projects, and collective creations. His approach combines the virtuosity of his Hip-Hop dance background with an exploration of intimacy and sensitivity. His work draws inspiration from encounters, diverse practices, and life experiences. Through hybrid choreographic forms, he explores the porosity between the reality experienced by the individual internally and the reality perceived by others externally. His interest lies in the transition from the real world to the stage space, with the body serving as a medium/witness of this transformation. Among his themes of creation, he explores the intersection of dance with other artistic practices, the relationship to constraint, effort, and physical commitment, the notion of perspective, image composition, and zoom, as well as a search for boundaries.

Since 2015, Julien has been developing his own choreographic work, progressively expanding its reach internationally. His works include MON/DE (2015), DÉJÀ VU (2016), GOLEM (2019), DRESS CODE (2021), COLLAPSE (2021), TRAJECTOIRES (2022), PAYSAGE (upcoming in 2024).

He has participated twice in training programs at the Royaumont Abbey in Paris: Prototype IV in 2016-17, and OPUS in August 2021. From 2020 to 2022, he has been  associated artist at Charleroi Danse, and will be associated with the Théâtre de Liège between 2024 and 2028. Julien is also supported by the Grand Studio, Bloom Project, and their respective networks.

Compagnie Abis

Established in 2017, the Abis company revolves around the choreographic work of Julien Carlier. It embraces an experimental approach that constantly blends disciplines and claims a hybrid aspect, situated between multiple forms of aesthetics. Among the activities developed by the company, there are organized creation projects, LABOS residencies aimed at refining or generating ideas and meeting artists, as well as engaging with audiences through workshops, discussions, and immersions in the company's work (mediation).

The recurring collaborations within the company play a crucial role in project realization. Simon Carlier is involved in the musical creation of all projects. Through his presence and continuous involvement in the creative processes, he provides valuable artistic and dramaturgical advice. He also contributes, in collaboration with the choreographer, to the development of the company's musical and sonic identity.

Choreographer Fanny Brouyaux has also collaborated on several projects as a dramaturge (GOLEM, DRESS CODE, COLLAPSE).

LABOS

LABOS are punctual and itinerant choreographic research residencies that take place in partner locations. They allow us to work on choreographic material through experimentation, generate ideas, bring disciplines and artists together, and freely invent multidisciplinary forms.

Each module revolves around a specific theme, always related to the ongoing research pursued by the company. Dancers and artists from other disciplines are invited to participate, exchanging and experimenting through movement within these themes.-

Over the years, LABOS have become an integral stage of our creative process. The back-and-forth between research and creation phases leads to the emergence of diverse choreographic paths. Some quickly develop into complete pieces, while others are abandoned or mature during future LABOS. The overall project of the company is rooted in the philosophy of "process," where the context, the people involved, and the elements at play fundamentally shape the form of the artistic works in progress. LABOS also provide unique opportunities to establish connections with the hosting venues and the community of dancers revolving around them, aiming to envision lasting collaborations with these institutions.
